Week 1 : Principle 1 – Draw (Work by hand) & Principle 3 (Develop visual language)

Drawing
Drawing is a personal matter that is done by hand and focuses on the aspect of thinking through drawing. One person who this relates to is Leonardo Da Vinci who found solutions by doing drawings.

Within the drawing below created by Da Vinci, he has drawn an image of a Giant crossbow, however he has used the drawing principle and thought about the process of making it work, after he had come up with an initial design.

The design is than explained using text and smaller sketches to describe how the mechanisms within the crossbow work.

The work of Da Vinci and the principle of drawing can also be linked to a piece of work done by Danny Gregory, which was about what he had ate. Even though the subject matter might not be the same and the qualities of the drawings are to different standards, both artists had created the drawings first before the thinking process of what is the next stage .

Visual language

Visual language is a creative tool that is used to generate ideas; this can be done using either imagery or text. It is all based on the idea of having a meaning.

Peter Blake had explored visual themes, which he was interested in, this was the theme of Pop art .His work was either a collage of lettering or images which he was interested in, by doing this he is almost telling a story within his work.

Another person who had generated ideas and made his thinking visual was Tony Buzan, however his style was different to Blake’s as he expressed his ideas through mind mapping instead of just using images or text.
Buzan had a meaning behind his mind maps as he had a subject which he wanted to expand on, just like Blake’s had a meaning behind his work, as it linked to an interest of his. The two styles used by Blake and Buzan try and tell a story or express a general idea by putting their thoughts down on paper just in different ways.
